In most grocery stores there is usually a complete aisle, if not more, devoted to all the types of bottled water available. For companies in the bottled water industry, this makes it a little challenging to stand out. However, Ryan Emmons, owner of Waiakea Hawaiian Bottle Water, is making waves in the industry.
Ryan Emmons has always had an interest in water. As a child, he would spend time with his family in Hawaii. He enjoyed the taste of the natural spring water that was located on his family’s land. He believed that other people would enjoy the water’s taste as much as he did, and he dreamed of starting a bottled water company. His first hurdle was trying to figure out how to get the water from its source to the public.
Emmons spent a lot of time learning and researching. He learned that no one can own the water in Hawaii, however, he did discover that it can be rented. He purchased a 99-year lease. Next, was marketing. That was the probably the easiest part for Waiakea. Waiakea water is the only volcanic water on the market. It is known to have health benefits too. It contains electrolytes, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and silica.
The plastic bottle was Emmons next hurdle. Knowing that only about 20 percent of plastic bottles actually get recycled concerned Emmons. Emmons was also concerned with the large carbon footprint that companies created when manufacturing the bottles. Emmons wanted a more sustainable way to manufacture bottles and wanted environmentally friendly bottles. After researching this problem, Emmons was able to develop a bottle that will completely decompose in 15 years. His company is sustainable and as technology continues to develop, Waiakea will continue to develop their product.
The story does not end there for Emmons and Waiakea Water. They also give back to the community that has given them so much. They are involved in many community projects and provide clean drinking water to communities worldwide.
