Rocketship Education shines a light in the education system of San Jose.

Rocketship Education is a non-profit community of public charter schools that began in San Jose, California. The program involves all stakeholders in the education system to enable the creation of a content ecosystem for learning. Rocketship Education provides an opportunity for San Jose’s urban poor and those studying the English language to have a chance at college. Their efforts have offset the establishment of a chain of over 25 new high-performance public charter schools to carter for the low-income communities. San Jose was once considered a haven for learning. A place where the phrase “American Dream” made sense. All this changed when the rich and the poor segregated. The low-income communities suffered most as the pathways out of poverty narrowed immensely.

The first school was launched in 2007. San José has influenced the neighboring districts to take the same course of action to improve the achievements of the students and improve college readiness. The area business community have also pitched in to help out. Billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla have dedicated a lot of resources towards creating learning platforms for the children. Reed Hastings who is the current Netflix CEO launched a large fund to support local education.

Rocketship Education CEO and co-founder, Preston Smith say that the foundation is built on the values of parent participation. The system incorporates an integrated and uniquely blended learning style which has made it the center of attention in the U.S. Smith says that the parents are involved in interviewing the teachers for positions at the charter school. For many parents, this serves as an excellent opportunity to start playing an active role in their children’s schooling. Rocketship Education currently runs at least 25 schools in the area.

Ever Rocketship school has specific core values in which they are built around: they include empathy, responsibility, respect, and responsibility. These cores are embedded in the Rocketeer creed which is like the school’s anthem. With the combined strength of all these stakeholders, San Jose is slowly morphing back to the “land of opportunity.” Rocketship Education has tapped into the innovative vitality of the region involving the teachers, educators and the learners themselves
